MORE ABOUT
Dedicated to Family, Leadership, and Progress
Jovan Jackson has deep roots in the Northeast Vegas Valley, where his family settled in North Las Vegas in the 1960s. They have been active members of Grace Immanuel Missionary Baptist Church since the 1980s. A graduate of Desert Pines High School and the College of Southern Nevada, Jovan is now pursuing a degree at UNLV to become a licensed therapist. He quickly found entrepreneurial success, opening his first business at 19 after graduating high school in 2010.
Jovan is an accomplished entrepreneur, advocate, and community organizer, currently serving as a senior board member of the Mass Liberation Project. Since 2011, he has run a small business and provided mental health and social services. He now seeks to extend his commitment to public service as a state legislator.
At 22, Jovan experienced a mental health crisis due to substance abuse, resulting in a two-year prison sentence for conspiracy to commit robbery. During his incarceration, he rehabilitated and worked as a wildfire firefighter. Reflecting on his journey, he says, "I found progress and success after my incarceration through family, leadership, and community engagement." Since his release in 2018, Jovan has been dedicated to advocating for vulnerable populations and aims to serve as the next Assemblyman for District Six.
Jovan recently survived stage 3 cancer and has remained steadfast in his commitment to the community. He hopes his story will inspire others.
"My health challenges motivated me to become an advocate. To support those with mental health conditions, I created a housing program for individuals receiving disability benefits. I will continue to champion the mental health community throughout my lifelong journey."
The Urban Voice Editorial on Jovan Jackson
Greetings, my name is Jovan Jackson
I was born and raised in Las Vegas, proudly of Italian-American and Black-American heritage. My father's family is from Louisiana and Arkansas, and they settled in Reno in the 1950s before moving to Las Vegas in the 1960s due to the cold weather. My mother's parents were Italian immigrants who raised their family in New Jersey. My parents met at the original Las Vegas Club in Downtown Las Vegas, where my father worked as a porter and my mother as a waitress. I was born on April 23, 1992, at Valley Hospital, and my first home was on Diana Drive.
I attended the magnet program at Desert Pines High School, graduating in 2010. During high school, I participated in track, wrestling, and varsity football for three years. I began my college education at UNLV but left after my first year to start my first business at 19. For 11 years, I ran a mental health agency, providing mental health and social services. Throughout my life, I have been dedicated to the community. From 2011 to 2013, I worked with high-risk youth in the juvenile diversion courts and have been providing resources and food for vulnerable populations for decades. Since 2018, I have protested and advocated for social justice. Additionally, I have served as a wildlife firefighter and continue to champion the right causes.
Currently, I am an entrepreneur, community organizer, and mental health advocate. I am a college graduate and am enrolled at UNLV with the goal of becoming a therapist. I serve on the advisory board of four nonprofit organizations, including the Mass Liberation Project and The Sistas That Paint. As a cancer survivor, I prioritize people over profits and politics.
I am running to be the next representative for Nevada Assembly District 6, a district that is very dear to me and my family. My family has lived here since the 1960s, attended the same church since the 1980s, and it is a community I am passionate about fighting for. I will advocate for funds to be directed to North Town and the West Side, and I will push for legislation that directly benefits Assembly District 6.
Assembly District 6 has a rich history. It was once segregated, with West Side Las Vegas being the first area where Black people could live. North Las Vegas was the first integrated city in southern Nevada. My grandmother was allowed to work on the Strip but could not live or patronize there. I understand how the history of Assembly District 6 still impacts our community. It's time for change!

MY ISSUES
Your voice counts.
my PRIORITIES
The 5 Pillars
With my 11 years of experience in social services and mental healthcare, advocating for others is my passion and lifestyle. Helping people and the community drives me. I have provided essential services for veterans, seniors, the disabled, and the houseless, and I will continue this advocacy as your next assemblyman.
I will fight for small businesses, a better educational system, accessible healthcare, labor union rights, safer food, environmental justice, senior care, veteran rights, women's rights, immigrant rights, and more resources for the houseless. I look forward to sponsoring bills that will improve the quality of life for Nevadans.
I. Affordable Housing
Housing is a human right. I will work to expand Section 8 and create housing programs for all income levels to ensure everyone has a place to call home.
II. Criminal Justice Reform
We need to remove certain barriers for the formerly incarcerated to help them secure housing, employment, and educational opportunities. This will improve their reintegration into society and reduce recidivism.
III. Welfare Rights
In times of need, welfare rights are crucial. I aim to enhance our welfare system by providing more resource programs, senior aid, additional food aid, and free healthcare programs.
IV. Free Mental Healthcare
There is a critical need for more free mental health programs. If someone is homicidal or suicidal, hospitals can only hold them for a few days. We need facilities where people can go for free when they are in crisis, to prevent tragedies.
V. Public Safety Reform
Let's transform public safety beyond traditional policing. We need more public safety enforcement agencies that include mental health professionals, domestic violence workers, social workers, and crisis intervention workers.
